Sealants are a more flowable version of the same material that is used for tooth colored composite fillings. They provide protection on the highest risk areas of teeth. The chewing surfaces, such as those found in the molars, are the most likely to have a serious cavity. Once the sealant is placed, it protects that surface as long it stays bonded. Traditional sealants have a life expectancy of 2-6 years! In our office at Kennedy Dental in Portland, we use an advanced technique to ensure 10 or more years of protection and longevity.
We recommend that children starting from 6 to 14 years of age have sealants because of their higher risk of tooth decay. However, sealants can be just as effective in preventative dental care for adults of all ages.
Our Portland dental patients often look to sealants as a long-term preventative dental care solution, and for good reason. Here are a few benefits to getting sealants applied:
- Long-Lasting Protection – Sealants can last up to 10 years before needing a reapplication! It’s a worthwhile investment, because they can prevent long-term tooth decay that would result in far costlier procedures.
- Convenient – Sealants can be placed without the need for anesthetic.
- Cosmetic – Our advanced sealant technique removes all the natural stains and other organic debris in the grooves of your teeth before a natural white sealant is placed. Sealed teeth ALWAYS look better!
