The term “gummy smile” refers to an excessive display of gum tissue. If 2mm or more of gum tissue shows in someone’s smile it is considered a gummy smile. A gummy smile is only an esthetic concern for some patients and can be corrected. There are four possibilities for a gummy smile:
- Short or Hyperactive upper lip
- Short tooth
- Dentoalveolar Extrusion (a condition in which the enamel on the teeth is covered by gum tissue)
- Vertical Maxillary Excess ( a condition in which the face height is longer than normal)
Many of the treatments for the gummy smile can be completed in our office with traditional surgical and laser techniques.
